Ég hef oft pælt í því hvers konar maður ég væri ef ég hefði farið aðra leið í lífinu. Lært aðra hluti. Gert aðra hluti. Haft áhuga á öðrum hlutum. Í dag, ef ég gæti tekið síðustu 20 árin upp á nýtt, þá hefði ég helgað mig tónlist. Hvað er göfugra en að skapa falleg hughrif? Fyrir það lifum við. Allt annað er bara skuggi.

Mér finnst alltaf mjög einkennilegt þegar ég heyri fólk segjast hafa engan áhuga á stjórnmálum. Það er gjörsamlega geðbiluð strategía. Æðsta stjórn okkar samfélags, ríkið, fer með gríðarleg, fáránleg, ótrúleg völd sem hafa bein og afgerandi áhrif á líf þitt nú og til frambúðar. Og ekki bara líf þitt. Líf foreldra þinna. Líf allra sem þú þekkir. Líf barna þinna í framtíðinni. Líf alls konar fólks sem þú þekkir kannski ekki, en sem dafnar eða þjáist, líður velsnægt eða skort, allt eftir því hvernig ríkisstjórnin hagar sér. Ég spyr bara, hvers konar heilvita manneskja hefur ekki áhuga á þessu, ef þá bara út frá sjálfsbjargarviðleitni og grunnhagsmunum? Það eru klárlega örlög þeirra sem ekki fylgjast með hvar valdið liggur að verða fórnarlömb þeirra sem gera það. Allir ættu að fylgjast með pólitík. Sumir greina kerfið og nota það til þess að gagnast einungis sér og sínum. Aðrir vilja nota ríkisvaldið öllum til hagsbóta en ekki bara þeim fáu, t.d. vinstrimenn eins og ég, okkur sem þykir í alvörunni vænt um þetta samfélag, ekki bara spennt að æða í jötuna. Við dæsum daglega yfir hve illa er farið með viðkvæmt ríkidæmi landsins, og vitum að það er hægt að gera miklu betur.

Mér finnst gjörsamlega ótrúlegt að það sé árið 2020 - ég vinn á átta kjarna fjölgígariða tölvu - og risastórt stórfyrirtæki (Facebook), með ótal forritara, ótal auðlindir, gefur út desktop hugbúnað (Messenger) fyrir macOS þar sem ég slæ inn texta hraðar en hugbúnaðurinn ræður við. Tilfinnanlegt lagg. Dæs.

IRC forritið mitt á 33 Mhz tölvu árið 1994 lét ekki svona, var hraðara í viðbragði og betra. Sama gildir um öll hin spjallforitin sem voru vinsæl á fyrsta áratug aldarinnar.

Skoðaði aðeins Messenger.app forritið og var ekki lengi að finna sökudólginn. Auðvitað Electron, sú ömurlega hugmynd að smíða hugbúnað ofan á hægu, akfeitu Chromium vefmaskínuna og láta eins og það sé boðlegt. Ég sver það, vefforritun hefur eyðilagt alvöru hugbúnaðarsmíði. Við erum með hraðari og betri tölvur en nokkru sinni fyrr, en hugbúnaðurinn keyrir samt hægar. Hörmuleg þróun. Þetta fólk hjá Feisbúkk ætti að skammast sín. Svona gera fagmenn ekki.

Við tölum ekki nógu mikið um hvað legó er mikil gargandi snilld. Elskaði legó sem krakki, átti risastórt safn og fylgdi aldrei leiðbeiningunum - það var fyrir lúsera. Finnst eins og mestallt sem ég hef fengist við í gegnum ævina sé mjög mikið eins og að leika sér með legó: Maður tekur kubbana og pússlar þeim saman á nýjan máta til þess að skapa eitthvað alveg nýtt.

Maður eiginlega bara springur úr vanþóknun yfir svona endemis þvælu. Þetta er ekki bara ósatt, heldur augljóslega ósatt. Ísland er eitt allra, allra auðugasta ríki heims. Við höfum vel ráð á að reka "stóru kerfin" okkar, og gætum hæglega fjármagnað þau talsvert betur ef pólitískur vilji væri fyrir hendi. Það sem við höfum ekki efni á eru þessir rotnu sjallar. Þeir kosta okkur formúu á hverju ári í formi spillingar, vanhæfni og glataðra tækifæra.

Eitt af því sem gerir mig spenntan fyrir sjálfkeyrandi bílum er fyrirbærið "hægrisinnaði leigubílstjórinn." Lendi reglulega í þessu þegar ég tek bíl. Þessir karlar (iðulega bitrir eldri karlar) geta oft á tíðum ekki staðist freistinguna að deila reactionary skoðunum sínum á útlendingum, skattheimtu, borgarstjórn, o.m.fl. Þetta þykir mér sérlega þreytandi þegar ég er að borga okur-einokunarprís fyrir farið.

Lenti í einum um árið sem romsaði yfir mér um hversu ósanngjarnt það væri að skattpeningar hans færu í skóla og leikskóla. "Ekki á ÉG börn," útskýrði hann. "Af hverju ætti ÉG að niðurgreiða menntun og umönnun annarra manna barna?" Ég sagði ekkert. Það er ekki ómaksins virði að taka suma slagi.

Ég lenti í svolítið fyndnu atviki á laugardaginn. Ég og kærastan fórum út að borða á Kol á Skólavörðustíg og fengum borð við gluggann í horninu. Skömmu síðar settust tveir menn í jakkafötum beint við hliðina á okkur, en ég er svo sjálfhverfur að ég pældi svosem ekkert í því, hélt bara áfram að spjalla.

Ég var að tala um hvað ég væri ánægður með starfið mitt. Ekki aðeins væru verkefnin skemmtileg heldur tryði ég á það sem ég væri að gera, fyndist skipta máli að fást við hluti sem væru öllum til hagsbóta til langs tíma litið. "Að hugsa sér," sagði ég, "að fást við eitthvað sem maður veit að er tilgangslaust eða beinlínis skaðlegt, t.d. flytja peninga á milli reikninga og fyrirtækja eins og þetta fjármálalið, sitjandi yfir Excel-skjölum, bara bullshit hjól í kapítalismanum. Hvernig getur þetta fólk lifað svona? Ég spyr eins og í John Lennon laginu, How Do You Sleep? Hvernig sefur þetta fólk eiginlega á næturnar?"

Eftir þetta byrjaði annar gaurinn á borðinu við hliðina á okkur, síðhærður og fúlskeggjaður, að gauta augunum furðulega oft að mér. Þetta hélt áfram svo gott sem stanslaust næsta klukkutímann eða svo. Fékk á tilfinninguna að hann væri að hlusta inn á samræðurnar.

Kom í ljós að þetta var Jón Ásgeir Jóhannesson.

Þegar ég kom heim úr vinnu í kvöld fann ég hræðilega limlest og brútalíserað lík á persneska svefnherbergisteppinu mínu. Það hafði bersýnilega verið rifið gjörsamlega í tætlur af einhverju hræðilegu rándýri: fótur hér, vængur þar, blóðslettur og fjaðrir þöktu græjukassann minn. Svo lá þárna blæðandi lítið kjötstykki sem ég gat aðeins ályktað að hefði eitt sinn verið skrokkurinn á fugli. Ég hirti herlegheitin upp með hönskum og ryksugaði.

Skömmu síðar stökk kötturinn Plató inn um gluggann. Hann gekk rakleiðis inn í svefnherbergi, varð furðu lostinn þegar hann sá að fórnarlambið var horfið, starði stuttlega á mig pirraður á svipinn, deplaði loks augunum, og nuddaði sér síðan upp við fótinn á mér eins og ekkert hefði í skorist.

Þetta er í fjórða skipti sem þetta gerist. Nú er nóg komið! Litli raðmorðinginn fær bjöllu um hálsinn hvort sem honum líkar betur eða verr!

Incidentally, in that old song about what to do with the drunken sailor, one of the lines goes "Put him in bed with the captain's daughter!" That made no sense to me until I discovered that this thing right here is a "Captain's Daughter" and being "put in bed" with her involves flogging.

But in business, let alone in government, it is only in crises that people find a budget for probabilistic interventions...The reason is that both bureaucrats and businesspeople are heavily attracted to the illusion of certainty. Standard cost-cutting ‘efficiencies’ can usually be ‘proven’ to work in advance; more interesting lines of enquiry come with [management] career-threatening unknowability.

One problem with this pretence of certainty is that cost-savings are more easily quantified than potential gains — so business and government are increasingly geared towards providing people with more, poorer things at an ever-lower price. Yet much evidence suggests that people like fewer, better things at a slightly higher price."

I already knew from painful experience that decrepit, miserable Britain isn't a normal, functioning Western European country governed by rudimentary principles of justice, proportionality and fairness. But this obsequious kowtowing to the Americans and flagrant abuse of state power beggars belief. Assange published some documents. All of it screams "show trial." Why don't they just fly him surreptitiously to the States and be done with it? It's not like Tory voters give a toss.

Not exactly surprising but chilling never the less:

When considering the use of nuclear weapons, the majority of Americans prioritize protecting U.S. troops and achieving American war aims, even when doing so would result in the deliberate killing of millions of foreign noncombatants. A number of individual-level traits—Republican Party identification, older age, and approval of the death penalty for convicted murderers—significantly increase support for using nuclear weapons against Iran. Women are no less willing (and, in some scenarios, more willing) than men to support nuclear weapons use. These findings highlight the limited extent to which the U.S. public has accepted the principles of just war doctrine and suggest that public opinion is unlikely to be a serious constraint on any president contemplating the use of nuclear weapons in the crucible of war.

Sannleikurinn er sá að ástand mála er almennt ekkert skárra annars staðar, síður en svo. Vissulega stela sjallarnir og vinir þeirra alveg heilmiklu, en ráðandi stéttirnar, kapítalistar og stjórnmálamenn í samkurli, stela auðvitað heilum hellingi í öllum ríkjum. Restin af heiminum er engin útópía. Ef það eru einhver ríki sem standa sig betur en Ísland þá eru það helst hin Norðurlöndin, auðugustu og best reknu þjóðríki heims. En við getum þá a.m.k. státað okkur af því að tala íslensku en ekki þessa hundljótu, afbökuðu skandinavísku.

Lately I've read lots of articles on the escalating tension between the US and Iran, but remarkably few commentators have drawn attention to Iran's ability to cripple global oil trade. It would be trivial for them to mine the narrow Straits of Hormuz. Around 20% of all traded oil and some 35% of seaborne oil shipments pass through the straits aboard enormous, highly vulnerable tankers. Even if Iran's military capabilities were miraculously nullified and the mines somehow cleared, the cost of insuring the tankers would skyrocket, driving up oil prices globally.

Iran could also use its long-range missiles and/or other methods to destroy major oil refineries and vital desalination plants on the Arabian peninsula, with ensuing chaos and shortages.

Even if the US were not still dependent on oil from the Middle East, all its major allies and trading partners are. The global economy needs a steady flow of oil from the Middle East, and the US economy is dependent on the global economy. War with Iran is madness any which way you look at it. The spines on this hedgehog are too sharp.

The Prussian general Kurt von Hammerstein may have made one of the most insightful observations of all time. This stuff is perennial:

I divide my officers into four groups. There are clever, diligent, stupid, and lazy officers. Usually two characteristics are combined. Some are clever and diligent — their place is the General Staff. The next lot are stupid and lazy — they make up 90% of every army and are suited to routine duties. Anyone who is both clever and lazy is qualified for the highest leadership duties, because he possesses the intellectual clarity and the composure necessary for difficult decisions. One must beware of anyone who is stupid and diligent — he must not be entrusted with any responsibility because he will always cause only mischief.

This is a very good point (old article from 2012):

The assassination strategy the US pursues is interesting, not in what it says about the US’s foes, but what it says about the American leaders... American leaders are obsessed with leadership because they lead organizations in whose goals no one believes. Or rather, they lead organizations for whom everyone knows the leadership doesn’t believe in its ostensible goals. Schools are led by people who hate teachers and want to privatize schools to make profit. The US is led by men who don’t believe in the Constitution or the Bill of Rights. Police are led by men who think their jobs are to protect the few and beat down the many, not to protect and serve. Corporations make fancy mission statements and talk about valuing employees and customers, but they just want to make a buck and will fuck anyone, employee or customer, below the C-suite... Making organizations work if they’re filled with people who don’t believe in the organization, or who believe that the “leadership” is only out for themselves and has no mission beyond helping themselves, not even enriching the employees or shareholders, is actually hard. People don’t get inspired by making the C-suite rich. Bureaucrats, knowing they are despised and distrusted by their political counterparts, and knowing that they aren’t allowed to do their ostensible jobs, as with the EPA generally not being allowed to protect the environment, the DOJ not being allowed to prosecute powerful monied crooks, and the FDA being the slave of drug companies and the whims of politically-connected appointees, are hard to move, hard to motivate, making it hard to get to anyone to do anything but the minimum.

So American leaders, and indeed the leaders of most developed nations, think they’re something special. In fact, getting people to do anything is difficult, and convincing people to do the wrong thing, when they joined to actually teach, protect the environment, make citizens healthier, or actually prosecute crooks, even more so. Being a leader in the West, even though it comes with virtually complete immunity for committing crimes against humanity, violating civil rights, or stealing billions from ordinary citizens, is, in many respects, a drag. A very, very well-paying drag, but a drag. Very few people have the necessary flexible morals and ability to motivate employees through the coercion required.

So American leaders, in specific, and Westerners, in general, think that organizations will fall apart if the very small number of people who can actually lead, stop leading. But that’s because they think that leading the Taliban, say, is like leading an American company or the American government. They think it requires a soulless prevaricator who takes advantage of and abuses virtually everyone and is still able to get people to, reluctantly, do their jobs.

Functioning organizations aren’t like that. They suck leadership upwards. Virtually everyone is being groomed for leadership and is ready for leadership. They believe in the cause, they know what to do, they’re involved. And they aren’t scared of dying, if they really believe. Oh sure, they’d rather not, but it won’t stop them from stepping up.
