Ég vil benda á áhugaverðan fyrirlestur sem heimspekingurinn John Searle flutti hjá Google, um bók sína Freedom and Neurobiology: Reflections on Free Will, Language, and Political Power. Þarna ræðir hann stuttlega um meðvitund og frjálsan vilja, tvö að því er virðist óleysanleg heimspekivandamál.

Fyrir 3 árum, í tíma í vísindasögu við King's College í London, kynntist ég þýska 16. aldar alkemistanum og "lækninum" Paracelsusi. Paracelsus hét upprunalega Phillip von Hohenheim, en breytti því auðvirðilega nafni yfir í Theophrastus Philippus Aureolus Bombastus von Hohenheim. Hann var þekktur sem Paracelsus, sem þýðir "ofar en Celsus", en Celsus var víðkunnur rómverskur læknir. Auðmýkt var Paracelsusi framandi; hann áleit sig langtum fremri fræðimann en allir spekingar fornaldar samanlagðir.

Það fyrsta sem ég velti fyrir mér þegar ég las um hann var hvort enska lýsingarorðið bombastic væri dregið af nafni hans. EtymOnline segir að svo sé ekki. Því miður. Paracelsus var nefnilega einstaklega bombastic, alveg með eindæmum hrokafullur. Ég sprakk úr hlátri þegar ég las eftirfarandi málsgrein í einu riti hans:

I am Theophrastus, and greater than those to whom you liken me; I am Theophrastus, and in addition I am monarcha medicorum and I can prove to you what you cannot prove...I need not don a coat of mail or a buckler against you, for you are not learned or experienced enough to refute even a word of mine...As for you, you can defend your kingdom with belly-crawling and flattery. Maður þyrfti að leggja þetta á minnið. Gott að geta kastað einhverju svona fram ef maður er spurður erfiðrar spurningar eftir fyrirlestur. Horfa bara illilega á viðkomandi og segja "every little hair on my neck knows more than you and all your scribes, and my shoe buckles are more learned than your authorities, and my beard has more experience than all your high colleges."

Þessi samskipti Hannesar og Egils Helgasonar eru fullkomið dæmi um Godwin's Law.

Eins og ég hef sagt áður: Á Íslandi eru þetta ekki einu sinni "intellectuals," bara óforskammaðir flokksgæðingar úr samvinnuskólanum og handboltapíur með lögfræðigráðu.

Ég rakst á eftirfarandi á RÚV áðan:

Nick Griffin, leiðtogi Breska þjóðarflokksins, þvertók fyrir að vera nasisti í sjónvarpsumræðuþætti BBC í gærkvöld, hann vék sér hins vegar undan því að svara spurningum um helför gyðinga í seinni heimsstyrjöld, áður hefur hann lýst yfir því að frásagnir af henni séu uppspuni. Þátttaka Griffins í umræðuþættinum vakti miklar deilur í Bretlandi. Sumir segja fráleitt að herskáir kynþáttahatarar sem sái sundurþykkju og mannfyrirlitningu fái að boða stefnu sína í ríkisreknu sjónvarpi, aðrir segja Griffin og fylgismenn hans eiga sama rétt á málfrelsi og aðrir.

Nú vill svo til að ég horfði á þennan Question Time þátt á BBC iPlayer áðan. Ég verð nú að segja að mér finnst gjörsamlega absúrd af Bretum að láta sér einu sinni detta í hug að neita British National Party aðgangi að ríkisfjölmiðlum.

Ég fyrirlít fólk eins og Nick Griffin. Rasistaflokkurinn hans er hins vegar með tvo þingmenn á Evrópuþinginu. Hann er talsmaður flokks sem er virkur þátttakandi í bresku stjórnmálalífi og málsvari ákveðins hluta pöpulsins. Hann hefur þar af leiðandi skýran lýðræðislegan rétt til þess að láta í sér heyra í fjölmiðli sem rekinn er á kostnað skattborgaranna.

Látum hugmyndir BNP berjast fyrir lífi sínu á vígvelli hugmyndanna, sjáum hversu lengi þær endast. Miðað við hvernig Griffin var tekinn í karphúsið í kvöld grunar mig að það geri manni eins og honum engan greiða að vera settur í sviðsljósið með eiturskörpum spyrlum BBC.

Thomas L. Friedman er svo hallærislegur. Það fór um mig kjánahrollur þegar ég las eftirfarandi í umfjöllun um bókina hans Hot, Flat and Crowded í Guardian:

Friedman's discussion of the environmental challenges facing the world contains valuable insights. Yet in the context of the book as a whole, these insights are almost inadvertent. Hot, Flat and Crowded is only incidentally about the environment. As is always the case with Friedman, its real subject is not the world, but America. The concluding paragraph is toe curling in its parochialism: 'We need to redefine green and rediscover America and in so doing rediscover ourselves and what it means to be Americans. We are all Pilgrims again. We are all sailing on the Mayflower anew.'

An Americo-centric perspective of this kind might have made some sense 20 years ago. In today's world, where the US is a tottering power, it is comically deluded. It is not America that will decisively shape the global response to climate change and energy crisis. It is emerging nations, above all China, which is definitely not sailing on the Mayflower.

John Gray flutti þennan mjög áhugaverða og gagnrýna fyrirlestur um frjálshyggju árið 2005 í Póllandi. Ég hef oft minnst á Gray áður á þessari síðu og hef miklar mætur á skrifum hans. Þess má geta að Gray var um tíma einn af ráðgjöfum Margrétar Thatchers og þar að auki einn af doktorsleiðbeinendum Hannesar HG við Oxford.

Um miðjan 9da áratuginn snérist Gray gegn frjálshyggjunni og hefur verið ötull gagnrýnandi útópískra stjórnmálahugmynda undanfarin tuttugu ár.

Ég er um þessar mundir að lesa bók mér til skemmtunar um Donatien Alphonse François, markgreifann af Sade (1740–1814), en orðið 'sadismi' er frá nafni hans dregið. Af mikilli undrun rakst ég á eftirfarandi í bréfum hans, en þarna segist markgreifinn vera fylgismaður efnishyggju Baron d'Holbachs. D'Holbach var einmitt viðfangsefni síðari meistararitgerðar minnar í fyrra:

[ . . . ] The System of Nature is verily and indubitably the basis of my philosophy, and I am and shall remain a faithful disciple of that philosophy even at the cost of my life, if it came to that. Síðan vissi ég ekki að markgreifinn var mjög pólitískt þenkjandi -- hann hafði svo sannarlega rétt fyrir sér með þetta:

Ódýrasta notaða eintakið kostaði 38 pund, eða 7600 kr. Mér þótti það allt of mikið þannig að ég fór á amazon.com. Þar kostaði sami diskur notaður 75 dollara, eða 9200 krónur. Enn þótti mér þetta alveg fáránlega dýrt, en þá kom ég auga á MP3 aðgang að tónlistinni á 10 dollara, hugsaði mér gott til glóðarinnar og smellti á hnappinn til þess að kaupa. Þá vandaðist málið.

Amazon.com sagði mér að ég þyrfti að sækja og innsetja e-ð andskotans Amazon MP3 Download forrit. Ég er lítið hrifinn af því að setja inn hugbúnað frá svona fyrirtækjum, sem eru iðulega hlaðin auglýsingum og njósnabúnaði, ómögulegt að henda þeim, o.s.fv., en lét mig þó hafa það, sótti forritið og installaði því -- nota bene notaði helvítið non-standard Mac OS X installer, það má skrattinn sjálfur vita hvers konar aukahugbúnaður og drasl dreifðist um harða diskinn minn.

En já, só far só gúdd. Fór aftur á Amazon.com, smellti á alla réttu hnappana, með þetta asnalega Amazon desktop forrit í gangi. Hvað ætli hafi komið upp?

Jahá, ég mátti ekki kaupa aðgang að MP3-unum vegna þess að ég var ekki í Bandaríkjunum. Lagalegu kostirnir mínir voru á þrotum. Svona endaði fyrsta tilraunin mín til þess að greiða fyrir tónlist í langan, langan tíma.

Þetta minnir mig óneitanlega svolítið á lokasetninguna í hrikalega þættinum Does Europe Hate Us? með erkibjálfanum Thomas L. Friedman -- "With India and China as rising powerhouses in the East, it is more important than ever for America and Europe to stand together!"

Það sem ég skil ekki er af hverju hagvöxtur fátæku ríkjanna þykir svona mikil ógn við vesturlönd. Er ekki bara eitthvað svona blinkered megaherz-benchpressing-typpastærðar-kapphlaup í gangi í hausnum á þessu liði?

Nú þegar langi armur bandarískra laga er búinn að festa klærnar í Roman Polanski varð mér hugsað til þess hversu mikið mér þykir til kvikmynda hans koma. Polanski hefur leikstýrt mörgum yfirburðargóðum kvikmyndum, þ.á.m. Chinatown, Rosemary's Baby, The Pianist og síðan hinni ógleymanlegu Bitter Moon.

Skoðanir eru hins vegar skiptar um nýlega kvikmynd hans, The Ninth Gate (1999), sem mér þótti helvíti góð. Svo er tónlistin í henni alveg frábær, en hún er eftir meistara Wojciech Kilar. Um daginn benti ég Hjalta Snæ á þessa mynd en hann fussaði og sveiaði eftir að hafa horft á hana, fannst hún vond. Að sama skapi hafa aðrir vinir mínir látið í ljós vanþóknun sína. Er ég eina manneskjan sem finnst Ninth Gate vera góð kvikmynd?

Í meistararitgerðinni minni við London School of Economics, sem fjallaði um sólmiðjukenningu Kóperníkusar, vitnaði ég í fræðimanninn Hans Blumenberg, en hann sagði jarðmiðjukenninguna vera "an almost perverse aberration representing a kind of autism of the human race" (Blumenberg 1987). Þegar ég las þessa setningu aftur um daginn varð mér af einhverri ástæðu hugsað til Íslendinga.

Var að enda við að lesa gegnum nokkrar ritgerðir eftir sjálfan mig frá 2002, fyrsta ári mínu í heimspeki við Háskóla Íslands . Þær eru afleitar. Svo afleitar að ég skammast mín og þori ekki að birta svo mikið sem eitt einasta textabrot hérna.
