Ég hef stundum látið frá mér athugasemdir þess efnis að nemendur mínir við Edinborgarháskóla séu merkilega fáfróðir. Þetta eru fyrsta árs nemendur, 18 ára gamlir, og sumir þeirra vissu t.d. ekki hver Marteinn Lúther var. Þetta kom mér á óvart, Edinborgarháskóli hleypir ekki hverjum sem er inn í nám. Þessir nemendur eru fólk sem fékk toppeinkunnir í A-Levels, rjómi breska grunnskólakerfisins.
Ég rakst áðan á grein sem listaði nokkrar spurningar úr GCSE prófi í vísindum sem krakkar eru látnir sitja 16 ára gamlir í grunnskólum í Bretlandi. Þetta eru eins konar samræmd próf:
