Þýska leikritaskáldið Bertold Brecht (sem samdi meðal annars Die Dreigroschenoper með Kurt Weill) fluttist til Bandaríkjanna skömmu eftir að nasistar náðu völdum í Þýskalandi. Honum var ekki beinlínis tekið opnum örmum þar -- hann þurfti að fara fyrir Joe McCarthy í "The Un-American Activities Committee" og svara fyrir um samúð sína með kommúnistum.
Fyrir rest endaði hann í Austur-Þýskalandi, en reyndist alveg jafn óþægilegur Stalínista-stjórnvöldum þar. Eftir verkamannabyltinguna þar 1953 samdi Brecht eftirfarandi texta, sem mér finnst hreint út sagt frábær:
